Dream Sleep OT

The Bedtime Reset Guide

The hour before bed shouldn't feel like the hardest part of your day. But for so many families of neurodiverse children, it does.

What's actually going on

This isn't a parenting problem.
It's a nervous system problem.

Your child isn't choosing to make bedtime difficult. What looks like defiance, avoidance, or playing up is almost always a nervous system that hasn't reached the state it needs to be in to sleep.

Neurodiverse children — those with ADHD, Autism, sensory processing differences, or a combination — experience sleep difficulties at significantly higher rates than their neurotypical peers. Not because of how they've been parented. But because their nervous systems regulate differently, and most of the sleep advice out there was never designed with their brains in mind.

It's particularly relevant if your child:

  • Resists or refuses the bedtime routine most nights

  • Takes a long time to fall asleep even when clearly exhausted

  • Cannot settle without you in the room

  • Wakes overnight and needs help resettling every time

  • Seems to winduprather than wind down as the evening progresses

  • Has sensory sensitivities that make the bedtime environment a battleground

  • Has a diagnosis of ADHD, Autism, or sensory processing differences — or is awaiting assessment

Jessinta Benton

Jessinta is an AHPRA-registered occupational therapist with a clinical focus on nervous system-based, neuro-affirming sleep support for children with neurodevelopmental differences. She works with families navigating bedtime battles, night waking, and parent-dependent sleep onset — and has seen firsthand what happens when we stop trying to make neurodiverse children fit a neurotypical sleep mould.

The Dream Sleep Method™ — the framework behind this guide — is the same approach Jessinta uses with families in 1:1 OT practice. The Bedtime Reset brings that clinical knowledge into a format families can use right now, at home, without needing a referral.

Dream Sleep OT is available via telehealth Australia-wide and in-person across Perth metro, funded through NDIS, Medicare CDM, and private health.
