Eleven month old developmental milestones and sleep

At around eleven months old, infants go through several developmental milestones in various areas, including physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development. Here are some common milestones you might observe:

1. Motor Skills: Most eleven-month-olds can:

– Pull themselves up to stand and may begin cruising along furniture.

– Start to take independent steps or even walk with assistance.

– Develop better control over fine motor skills, such as picking up small objects with their thumb and forefinger (pincer grasp).

2. Language and Communication: At this stage, children often:

– Babble with more complex sounds and intonation patterns.

– Understand simple words and phrases and may respond to simple commands.

– Use gestures to communicate their needs and desires.

– Say a few simple words, such as “mama” or “dada.”

3. Cognitive Skills: Eleven-month-olds may:

– Show improved problem-solving abilities, such as figuring out how to stack blocks or fit objects into containers.

– Engage in simple pretend play, like pretending to talk on a toy phone.

– Begin to demonstrate object permanence, understanding that objects continue to exist even when they are out of sight.

4. Social and Emotional Development: Some social and emotional milestones include:

– Developing a stronger attachment to familiar caregivers.

– Displaying a wider range of emotions, including joy, frustration, and separation anxiety.

– Attempting to imitate others’ actions and expressions.

– Showing interest in playing alongside other children.

Regarding sleep, every child’s sleep patterns can differ. However, by eleven months, many infants start to establish more predictable sleep routines. They may have a more consolidated nighttime sleep and take one or two naps during the day. The average sleep duration for an eleven-month-old is around 12-14 hours per day, including nighttime sleep and naps.

It’s important to note that these milestones are general guidelines, and every child develops at their own pace. If you have any concerns about your child’s development or sleep patterns, it’s always a good idea to consult with your paediatrician/GP or contact Dream Sleep Occupational Therapy.
