Nine months old developmental milestones and sleep

At around nine months old, babies go through several developmental milestones and changes in their sleep patterns. Here are some common milestones and sleep patterns you might observe:

1. Physical development:

– Sitting without support: By this age, most babies can sit unsupported for extended periods.

– Crawling or scooting: Many babies start to explore their surroundings by crawling or scooting.

– Pulling up to stand: Some babies may be able to pull themselves up to a standing position while holding onto furniture.

2. Fine motor skills:

– Pincer grasp: Babies may start using their thumb and index finger to pick up small objects.

– Finger feeding: They may begin to feed themselves with finger foods.

3. Language and communication:

– Babbling: Babies typically continue to experiment with different sounds and syllables.

– Responding to simple instructions: They may understand and respond to simple commands or requests, such as “wave bye-bye.”

4. Sleep patterns:

– Consolidated nighttime sleep: By nine months, many babies can sleep for longer stretches at night, typically around 10-12 hours.

– Napping schedule: They usually take two to three naps during the day, with each nap lasting 1-2 hours.

– Sleep regressions: Some babies may experience sleep regressions around this age, where their sleep patterns temporarily become disrupted due to developmental leaps or other factors. These regressions usually resolve on their own.

Remember, every baby develops at their own pace, so there can be variations in reaching these milestones or sleep patterns. If you have any concerns about your baby’s development or sleep, it’s always a good idea to consult with your paediatrician/ GP or contact Dream Sleep Occupational Therapy for personalised guidance.
