Using a night light

Introducing a night light for toddlers can vary depending on their individual needs and development. While there is no specific age at which night lights should be introduced, many parents begin using them when their child starts showing signs of fear or discomfort in the dark. This typically happens around the age of 2 to 3 years old.

Toddlers at this stage may develop a fear of the dark, experience separation anxiety, or have trouble falling asleep. A night light can help provide a sense of comfort and security by illuminating their surroundings with a gentle and soothing glow.

It’s important to note that every child is different, and you should consider your child’s specific needs and temperament when deciding to introduce a night light. Some children may not require one at all, while others may benefit from it earlier or later. Pay attention to your child’s cues and adjust accordingly.

When selecting a night light for your toddler, opt for a model with a soft and dim light that won’t disturb their sleep, a red coloured light is best. Avoid bright or stimulating lights that may interfere with their ability to fall asleep. Additionally, ensure the night light is safely positioned, away from the child’s reach and any flammable objects.

Remember that while a night light can provide comfort, it’s also important to help your child develop healthy sleep habits. Establish a consistent bedtime routine, create a calm and soothing sleep environment, and address any underlying fears or anxieties that may contribute to their difficulty sleeping.
