As an occupational therapist, there are several sleep interventions you can implement to help hyperactive toddlers establish healthy sleep habits. Here are some strategies you can consider:
1. Establish a consistent bedtime routine: Create a predictable sequence of calming activities leading up to bedtime. This routine can include activities like reading a book, taking a warm bath, and listening to soft music. The repetition and predictability of the routine can help signal to the child that it’s time to wind down and prepare for sleep.
2. Create a sleep-friendly environment: Make sure the child’s bedroom is conducive to sleep. Ensure the room is dark, quiet, and at a comfortable temperature. Use blackout curtains, white noise machines, or soft music to minimise distractions and create a soothing atmosphere.
3. Engage in sensory activities before bed: Hyperactive toddlers often have excess energy that can make it challenging for them to settle down at bedtime. Engaging in sensory activities such as jumping on a trampoline, playing with playdough, or using a sensory swing can help regulate their sensory system and promote relaxation before sleep.
4. Provide deep pressure input: Deep pressure can have a calming effect on the nervous system. You can incorporate activities like gentle massages, deep hugs, or using weighted blankets to provide deep pressure input before bedtime. These activities can help the child feel secure and calm, making it easier for them to transition to sleep.
5. Limit screen time before bed: The blue light emitted by screens can interfere with the natural sleep-wake cycle. Avoid exposing the child to screens (TV, tablets, smartphones) at least one to two hours before bedtime. Instead, encourage quiet activities like reading books or engaging in calm play.
6. Teach relaxation techniques: Help the child develop relaxation skills that they can use independently to calm themselves before sleep. Deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, or guided imagery can be taught to toddlers in a simplified and age-appropriate manner. These techniques can promote relaxation and reduce hyperactivity.
7. Maintain consistent sleep and wake times: Establish regular sleep and wake times, even on weekends. A consistent schedule helps regulate the child’s internal body clock and promotes better sleep quality.
Remember, every child is unique, so it’s important to tailor interventions to meet the specific needs of the hyperactive toddler you are working with. Collaborating with the child’s parents or caregivers is also crucial to ensure consistency across environments and reinforce the strategies being implemented.
