When and how to drop a nap?

The timing of dropping a nap can vary from one infant to another, as every child develops at their own pace. However, there are some general guidelines that can help you determine when to drop a nap for your infant.

Typically, infants transition from three naps to two naps between 6 and 9 months of age. The first nap to go is often the late afternoon nap, which is usually dropped around 6 to 9 months. As a result, your infant would have two naps—one in the morning and one in the early afternoon.

Around 12 to 18 months, most infants transition from two naps to one. You may notice that your child starts resisting the morning or afternoon nap, takes longer to fall asleep, or wakes up earlier from their naps. These signs indicate that they might be ready to transition to a single nap. The single nap is typically scheduled in the early afternoon, after lunch. It’s important to note that these are general guidelines, and your child’s individual sleep patterns and needs should be taken into account. Some infants may transition to fewer naps earlier or later than the typical ages mentioned above.

Pay attention to your child’s sleep cues, behaviour, and overall sleep quality to determine when they might be ready to drop a nap. Consulting with Dream Sleep Occupational Therapy can also provide guidance tailored to your child’s specific needs.
