What does sleep for a Four months old infant look like?

At around four months of age, infants typically go through significant changes in their sleep patterns. While every baby is unique and may have different sleep needs, here are some general guidelines regarding sleep at this stage:

1. Sleep duration: Babies around four months old typically sleep for about 14 to 16 hours a day, with night-time sleep stretching for 9 to 11 hours and daytime naps totalling 3 to 5 hours.

2. Bedtime routine: Establishing a consistent bedtime routine can help signal to your baby that it’s time to sleep. This routine may include activities such as a warm bath, a gentle massage, reading a book, or singing a lullaby.

3. Sleep schedule: By this age, babies often start to develop a more predictable sleep schedule. They may have three naps during the day, usually in the morning, early afternoon, and late afternoon. Bedtime tends to be around 7 pm to 8 pm.

4. Sleep environment: Ensure that your baby’s sleep environment is safe, comfortable, and conducive to sleep. Keep the room dimly lit, maintain a moderate temperature, and use a firm and flat crib or bassinet with a fitted sheet. Consider using white noise or a gentle lullaby to create a soothing ambiance.

5. Sleep associations: Encouraging independent sleep is beneficial for babies’ long-term sleep habits. Help your baby learn to fall asleep on their own by putting them down drowsy but awake. Avoid relying on sleep associations like nursing, rocking, or using pacifiers to help your baby fall asleep, as they may create sleep dependencies.

6. Night-time awakenings: At four months, some babies may still wake up once or twice during the night. It’s important to respond to their needs while also encouraging them to self-soothe and fall back asleep on their own if they’re not hungry or in distress.

Remember that these are general guidelines, and each baby’s sleep patterns and needs can vary. It’s essential to adapt to your baby’s individual cues and consult with Dream Sleep Occupational Therapy for a personalised Sleep Plan.
