At around 8 months of age, infants usually have established a more predictable sleep pattern and may be sleeping for longer stretches at night. However, every baby is different, and sleep patterns can vary. Here are some general guidelines for an 8-month-old infant’s sleep:
1. Nighttime sleep: Most 8-month-old infants sleep for about 10-12 hours at night. They may have a longer stretch of sleep, typically around 6-8 hours, followed by one or two shorter wake-ups for feeding or comforting. By this age, many infants can sleep through the night without needing to be fed.
2. Naps: An 8-month-old typically takes 2-3 naps during the day. The length of these naps can vary, but they usually total around 2-3 hours of daytime sleep. Naps might be shorter or longer depending on the individual baby.
3. Bedtime routine: Establishing a consistent bedtime routine can be helpful in signaling to your baby that it’s time to sleep. This routine can include activities such as a bath, changing into pajamas, reading a book, singing a lullaby, or any calming activities that work well for your baby.
4. Sleep environment: Ensure that your baby’s sleep environment is safe, comfortable, and conducive to sleep. Keep the room dark, quiet, and at a comfortable temperature. Consider using a white noise machine to help drown out any background noises that might disturb your baby’s sleep.
5. Encourage self-soothing: At 8 months, some infants may be capable of self-soothing and putting themselves back to sleep if they wake up in the middle of the night. You can encourage this by putting your baby down to sleep when they are drowsy but still awake. This can help them learn to fall asleep independently and self-settle if they wake up during the night.
Remember that every baby is unique, and sleep patterns can vary. Some infants may sleep through the night earlier, while others may still need more night-time feedings or have shorter naps. If you have concerns about your baby’s sleep or if they are experiencing significant sleep difficulties, it’s always a good idea to consult with Dream Sleep Occupational Therapy.
